Collaboration – Mike Vax & Ron Romm

“If you, like me, love great trumpet playing, Collaboration (Summit – 713) by MIKE VAX & RON ROMM is a must have album.  Vax is best known for his time spent as the lead trumpet on Stan Kenton’s Orchestra, and his subsequent efforts to keep the Kenton legacy alive through many educational projects and leadership of the Stan Kenton Legacy Orchestra.  Romm was a founder and long time member of the Canadian Brass and currently serves as Professor of Trumpet at the University of Illinois.  These two gentlemen have been friends for decades, and have talked about recording together for much of that time, but until recently circumstances stood in the way of that happening.  Now that it has occurred, the world is a better place.  They laid down twelve tracks, most of them with Jack Peterson on guitar, Ioannis Goudelis on piano, Selwyn Reams on bass and Clive Huff on drums.  There are guest appearances by Dr. David Hickman on trumpet, Tony Vacca on reeds, Scott Whitfield on trombone, Joel Robin on piano, and Avis Romm on piano.  Trying to single out any of the tracks for special mention is unfair to those not so recognized, so just suffice to say that no matter which track you hear, “The Shadow of Your Smile,” “Cornet Chop Suey,” “My Pal Vachee,” “I Remember Clifford,” “Up Jumped Spring,” “Hayden Trumpet Concerto, Movement Two – Andante,” “Collaboration,” “Lenny Leaps Out,” “The Brave Matador,” “just a Closer Walk with Thee,” “The Summer Knows” or “Sweet Emma,” you will be transported to a magic place where trumpets rule the day.  As the titles indicate, a lot of musical ground is covered, all of it as tastefully and musically adept as possible.  This is a Collaboration in the best sense of the word.”

Discovery – Thomas Bacon

World premiere recordings of six new pieces by five different composers that were written for hornist Thomas Bacon and pianist Caio Pagano. The title comes from the major work on the disc: Trio “a carta de Pero Vaz de Caminha” for horn violin and piano. Inspired by the writing of Pero Vaz de Caminha, the secretary and keeper of the journal chronicling the events of the first Portuguese expedition to Brazil in the year 1500, the Trio describes the explorers’ first sighting of the land and its people. The Trio was written by Almeida Prado in the year 2000 upon the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Portuguese discovery of Brazil. Hornist Thomas Bacon’s work in the U.S., Europe, South America, and Asia has placed him in the highest echelon of hornists worldwide. Bacon was founder and general editor of The Complete Hornist, a very popular and successful series of music for horn and horn ensemble published in 1987.

St. Louis Brass Quintet

St. Louis Brass Quintet

Founded in 1964, the Saint Louis Brass Quintet is one of America’s longest standing brass quintets. The group was originally formed by members of the St. Louis Symphony to play children’s concerts around the St. Louis area. Soon though, they had expanded to present full length concerts funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Missouri Arts Council and the Mid-America Arts Alliance. Now, forty years and more than 2,500 engagements later, the only original member still in the group — and the only one who actually lives in St. Louis — is trombonist Melvyn Jernigan. The other quintet members hold top positions across the United States, and none of them are members of the St. Louis Symphony.
