From a salsa tribute of a McCoy Tyner tune, through a three-horn arrangement of a Tom Harrell tune, through solid originals, this sextet+ shines!

World-class, unique instrumentation of horn, violin and piano with contemporary pieces.  This CD presents four contemporary works for horn, violin, and piano. The oldest work was written in 1985, the newest in 2005 (and revised in 2013). Two of this diverse group of composers are American, one is Canadian, and one is British.

James Grant was immediately drawn to Shearer’s effortless command of technique, her sensitive and expressive playing, and her deep, intuitive musicianship, suggesting they record his works, and they did. Most of the music on this recording has been arranged for French horn from works originally composed for tuba or euphonium.

During 15 years of SFJO, the band has released four albums of original music and presented many great artists in concert; including Randy Brecker, Arturo Sandoval, Wycliffe Gordon, Kevin Mahogany, Tom Scott, and the legendary Ira Sullivan. The music compiled here is the result of an interest in combining the warmer sonorities of alto flute, English horn, french horn, tuba and strings with a rhythm section and soloist to complete a large ensemble picture. Chamber jazz: fusing elements of music from French composers, most notably, Ravel and Debussy with jazz. Result: Tasty outing that you’ll want to hear over and over.
