Description

Featuring new works from Stephen Anderson that draw on various folkloric rhythms and concepts from different parts of the Dominican Republic, “Desde Lejos” shines as the follow-up to Dominican Jazz Project’s 2016’s self-titled critically acclaimed debut on Summit…said of the first one:  “…full of creative energy and the joy of musical discovery.” -All About Jazz
“Twenty-twenty” (2020) was to be the year that the Dominican Jazz Project returned to the studio.  It had been far too long since the 2016 self-titled release.  The band was very productive, performing at festivals in the Dominican Republic, playing jazz clubs, and performing and giving masterclasses at universities, but they needed to return to the studio to create more music.  Yet, as was the case for the rest of the world, the sudden turn of events brought on by the pandemic created unanticipated challenges…Stephen Anderson decided to use the new-found time to hibernate in the “compositional woodshed,” and began composing several new works that draw on various folkloric rhythms and concepts from different parts of the Dominican Republic that Guy Frómeta, David Almengod, and Sandy Gabriel had hipped him to.  Carlos Luis had previously composed two beautiful ballads that would be used for the project–and they would draw from Guillo Carias’ library of originals, recording his beautiful tune, Si Tu Supieras.
